Our constitution envisages equal opportunities to all regardless of any discrimination, yet after almost two decades into the 21st century we are still struggling to bridge the Gender pay gap. An indicator which reflects if a female is reimbursed the pay equal to her male counterpart for the same amount of work. Whether its a developed or a developing economy, countries are lagging by way much to mitigate their disparities. For instance, India had whooping gender pay gap of 54% over the years from 2006-11. The data is unfathomable and directly contradicts our ethos and our very fundamental rights.
The pay gap is not endemic to mere corporate sector. Any named profession around us can easily testify the existence of a pay deficit based on the gender. From medium and small to large industries, high profile Bollywood to the Indian women's cricket team, the gender gap seems the unfortunate binding force. While the fees charged is equal at the academic level, one wonders the motivation for differing salaries at the workplace. And studies reveal that the gap stands proportional with age. Consequently, it gets more bleak for an experienced lady to survive even with all her expertise and skills.
The problem stands tall but its possible reasons are rooted deep within our society. The foremost obstacle is the inferior notion of male-superiority. Until one learns to respect and treat every individual as equal, they should be proscribed from the workplace. Women(especially girls) from small towns still face hurdles in their education; often to convince family for higher degrees or to gain the relevant work experience for an ambitious job. These issues only restricts them from their goals and at times land them with below par skills to survive in the workplace.
And Gender Pay Gap is not the lone evil. In recent years, the ghastly shadows illuminated by the #MeToo movement has revealed some horrifying stories as well. Over the years, the stories changed, the issues changed, but the one who suffered was always a female!
